Fragokastelo fortress - Crete

The impressive Fragokastelo ("castle of the Franks") was built by Venetians in 1371 and was intended to protect the south coast of Crete. The castle is rectangular in shape, with strong walls and a tower in each corner. Above the the castle's gate there is a carved lion of Saint Mark and other Venetian symbols.

In front of the castle there is an enchanting sandy beach. Fragokastelo is more than an hour drive from Matala. From Fragokastelo there are daily boat excursions to Plakias and Agia Galini.

Fragokastelo is associated with the phenomenon of "Drosoulites" that occurred in spring; shadows of men in black wearing helmets and carrying swords appear at dawn . They advance from the castle to the chapel of St. Charalambos and are visible for about 10 min
